The Unwritten Weight of Words is an auto-ethnographic video that interrogates the visceral politics of language and power as enacted on the diasporic body. Drawing on the artist’s personal experience, the work exposes fractures of ideological imposition and cognitive dissonance that emerge between China’s disciplinary nationalism and Australia’s demands for assimilation. It features bodily performances imbued with psychological tension, utilising textual-sculpture props like plastic sheets inscribed with fragmented Chinese and English. A dominant, accented English narration is layered over a muffled recitation of a classical Chinese text, creating a stratified and dissonant bilingual soundscape.
